The thinking behind the app

Why Cappture

The story and choices behind Cappture.

It started with our pack walks

We like to think of our longer walks with our dog as our pack walks. Fresh air, whatever the weather, and space to talk and relax.

We made a deliberate decision to leave our phones at home. They can have such an impact on how we feel. It’s so easy for us (well, mainly me) to go from talking about a great idea or something exciting to explore, to looking down at a screen and missing out on what really matters. Having that time away was good for our mental health.

But the ideas and plans from those conversations would often fade or be forgotten by the time we got home.

And after a particularly stressful week (or weeks!), work thoughts could keep interrupting. Something I needed to do would come to mind, and I’d find myself holding onto it or going over it again.

We still wanted to be contactable in an emergency, so we wore our watches. The Watch seemed like an obvious place to save a thought, but doing that wasn’t as easy or reliable as I needed it to be.

I wanted to remember our ideas and plans without reaching for a phone, and give the work thoughts somewhere to wait. Then get back to the walk.

That’s where Cappture began.

I hope you find Cappture useful when you need it, and that it helps you get back to the things that matter to you.

A few years in the making

Cappture has existed in some shape or form for a few years. I’ve worked on it in small pockets of time, gradually getting it closer to something that could be useful to others.

There’s a bit of irony in it too. The speed at which AI has developed has helped make bringing Cappture to life and sharing it with the wider world much more possible. At the same time, it’s speeding so much else up.

For me, that makes something like Cappture all the more important. It’s easy to follow a thought back to a screen, where AI can give you even more ideas and things to try to keep pace with.

Sometimes I just want to save the thought, leave it there for a while and get back to the walk.

Simple, deliberately

Cappture developed into something that worked for me when I needed it.

I made a deliberate decision to keep it simple and disconnected by default. I didn’t want saving a work thought to pull me back into work. I wanted to know it was saved, so I could leave it alone for a while.

You decide when to come back to it and what to do next.

Something useful, with something to give back

I want Cappture to be accessible to people who could find it useful.

And if it does well, I want that success to help me create more and support others. Practical community work like Glasgow Wood is the sort of thing I’d like to put more into as Cappture grows.
